What to see and do in Castellnou de Seana

Castellnou de Seana
Village
Castellnou de Seana is a municipality in the Pla d'Urgell, in the province of Lleida, irrigated by the Urgell canal, which preserves the baroque parish church of Sant Joan Baptista. It has 726 inhabitants and its municipal term, a plain sloping down towards the river Corb, is crossed by the A-2 motorway. It arose as a population centre in the 12th century, as certified by the settlement charter granted in 1179 by Guillem d'Anglesola and his wife Arsendis to forty-seven settlers; it took its name from the nearby plot of Sesana. Its economy was based on cereal growing, later extended to fruit, and from the 1970s onward also on pig farming. It has a railway station built in the late 1950s by all its residents together.

The church is reached by nine circular steps up to a doorway with a round arch and pediment, with a niche depicting Saint John baptising Christ. According to a contract of 1744, the church was built by the master builders of Barbens, López Major and López Menor, father and son, using stone from the earlier church. After the destruction of the Civil War, which burned the altarpiece, it was remodelled from 1954, when the chapel of Sant Blai was built.
