What to see and do in Sant Martí de Riucorb

Sant Martí de Riucorb
Village
Sant Martí de Riucorb is a municipality in the comarca of Urgell, in the province of Lérida, formed in 1972 by the merger of the districts of Sant Martí de Maldà and Rocafort de Vallbona. It belonged to the barony of Anglesola and later to that of Bellpuig; traces from the Middle Ages remain in the necropolis of Fogonussa. It has 668 inhabitants and lives from cereal, vine and olive farming. In Maldà stands the parish church, built between 1602 and 1668 on top of an earlier one from 1313, with a baroque Solomonic doorway by the sculptor Pau Viala and a bell tower from 1774; beside it stands the castle of Sant Martí, from 1212, and the hermitage of San Roque, from the 18th century.
Church of Sant Martí de Maldà
Monument
The parish church of Sant Martí de Maldà, in the municipality of Sant Martí de Riucorb (Urgell), is protected as a bien cultural de interés nacional (the highest heritage protection status in Catalonia) in the category of historic monument, a declaration initiated in 1980 and confirmed in 2017. It was built between 1602 and 1668 on the site of an earlier church documented in 1313; the portal, in Salomonic Baroque style, is the work of the sculptor Pau Viala (1694), and the bell tower, by the architect Josep Prat, was raised in 1774. The church is also notable for the mural paintings by various artists preserved inside.
Castle of Sant Martí
Monument
The castle of Sant Martí de Maldà, documented since 1212, crowns the hamlet of the same name, at 421 metres above sea level, within the municipal term of Sant Martí de Riucorb, a municipality created from the merger of several villages in 1972. Of the medieval fabric only the lintel of a window survives, bearing the date 1779, the year of a renovation that gave it its present appearance as a three-storey house: on the ground floor a round-arched doorway opens onto a garage, on the first floor there are three windows, and on the top floor a porticoed gallery with Tuscan columns. It is listed as a bien cultural de interés nacional (the highest heritage protection status in Catalonia).
Corb River
Nature
The Riu Corb is a left-bank tributary of the Segre that crosses the comarques of Conca de Barberà, l'Urgell, Pla d'Urgell and Segrià; its name comes from the Latin curvu, “curved, winding”. It rises at the Font de Rauric and runs westward through Llorac and Vallfogona de Riucorb, where it collects the waters of the Riu Seniol, and continues through Guimerà, Ciutadilla, Nalec, Sant Martí de Maldà, Maldà and Belianes, where it turns north and briefly disappears among vineyards and olive groves before resuming its course near Bellpuig. From there it crosses Castellnou de Seana, el Poal, Linyola, Bellvís and Térmens before flowing into the Segre at Vilanova de la Barca, after 57 kilometres. It is one of the three rivers that shape the landscape of l'Urgell, together with the Sió and the Ondara.
