What to see and do in Navès

Navès
Village
Navès is a municipality in the Solsonès, in the province of Lleida, in the eastern sector of the comarca, bordering the Berguedà and the Bages. It preserves the monastery of Sant Pere de Graudescales and three termenat castles. Two rivers cross it from north to south, the Aigua d'Ora to the east and the Cardener to the west, which meet at the southern end of the municipality; to the north the terrain exceeds 1500 metres at the Serra de Busa, already in the Pre-Pyrenees, while the south, in the Central Depression, does not exceed 800 metres. The municipality, made up of nine population entities, has a municipal swimming pool at Santa Llúcia and a futsal pitch, and holds its festa major and other events at the Sala d'Esplai.
Monastery of Sant Pere de Graudescales
Monument
A Benedictine monastery founded in 913 by the cleric Magnulf and consecrated by the bishop of Urgell; the only building still standing from the old community, it rises alone in the small Valldora, on the eastern flank of the cliffs of the Serra de Busa, beside the Aigua d'Ora stream. The present church, with a Latin-cross plan with one nave, three apses and an octagonal dome over the crossing, decorated on the outside with Lombard arcading, was completed in the 12th century. Converted into a parish in 1270, it lost its religious use in 1900 and was excavated and restored between 1956 and 1967. In 1903 the priest Pere Pujol made known a 12th-century document drawn up there, the Greuges dels homes de Sant Pere de Graudescales, one of the earliest complete texts in the Catalan language.
Castle of Navès
Monument
Located at the eastern end of the scattered cluster of houses surrounding the parish church of Navès, the castle is documented since 968, when the bishop of Urgell granted it to Mir; his lineage held extensive domains in the area for nearly two centuries. In 1103 it was handed over to the church of Santa Maria de Solsona together with the parish of Navès and the castle of Pujol Melós. King Jaume I spent the night there on 27 June 1259, coming from Manresa and avoiding Cardona because of his conflict with the viscounts, allies of the counts of Foix. From the mid-14th century the castle fell into decline and became depopulated. Today only the lower part of the main tower survives, 5.50 m in diameter, incorporated into a farmhouse remodelled between the 16th and 18th centuries, inhabited to this day.
Castle of Besora
Monument
The castle of Besora stands on a hill of the Vall de Lord, between Navès and the Serra de Busa, in the Solsonès, at about 840 metres of altitude, from where much of the lower Solsonès is dominated. Documented since 982 as "chastro Besora", it formed, together with the castles of Navès and Lladurs, the defensive system that controlled access to the valleys of the river Aigua d'Ora, the Cardener and the Lladurs stream, on the frontier that Count Wilfred the Hairy established at the end of the 9th century against the Muslim territories. In 1312 Ramon de Jorba sold it, together with that of Navès, to the provost of Solsona. The building, made up of three medieval rectangular sections forming an elongated tower some twenty metres long, today serves as a farmhouse.
Castle of Pujol Melós
Monument
Remains of the castle and of the pre-Romanesque church of Sant Andreu, near an old oil mill, in a rugged spot toward the vall d'Ora; it was dependent on the castle of Navès. Documented since the early 12th century, in 1103 Ramon Mir ceded it, along with Navès, to the church of Santa Maria de Solsona. Today only the ruins of the eponymous house remain, rebuilt in modern times.
Navès Main Festival
Activity
The Festa Major of Navès is celebrated around 25 August in honor of Sant Genís, patron saint of the town.
Rabbit and veal with mushrooms
Food and drink
Stews of rabbit or of beef with rovellons, ceps or camagrocs, which combine mountain livestock farming with the autumn gathering. They are the seasonal dish in the inns and rural tourism farmsteads of the comarca.
