What to see and do in Riner

Riner
Village
Riner is a municipality in the Solsonès, in the province of Lleida, in the south-east of the comarca, bordering the Bages. Its municipal capital is El Miracle, where the sanctuary of the same name stands, the territory's main attraction; the municipality also groups together the settlements of Freixinet, Riner, Santa Susanna and Su, the latter incorporated in the mid-19th century. In the middle of that century it had 325 inhabitants, according to Pascual Madoz's Dictionary; today it has 269. Next to the sanctuary of the Miracle, it preserves the church of Santa María de Su. The territory, on the Solsonès plateau, is crossed by the Cardener river and its tributary the Negro river.
Shrine of el Miracle
Monument
A religious centre dedicated to the Virgin of the Miracle, located in the western part of the municipal term of Riner, in the Solsonès, where it gives its name to the population entity of El Miracle. The complex brings together a church, a chapel and a Benedictine monastery dependent on Montserrat, with cells, a house of spirituality and a Baroque interpretation centre. It preserves two notable altarpieces: a Gothic-Renaissance one from the 16th century attributed to Pere Nunyes, and the great Baroque altarpiece of the Miracle, from the 18th century, carved by Carles Morató between 1747 and 1758 and gilded and painted by Antoni Bordons between 1760 and 1774. The complex was declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection) on 22 April 2008.
Castle of Riner
Monument
The Castell de Riner is a fortified tower from the 12th-13th centuries in the municipality of Riner, in the Solsonès, declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Spain's highest level of heritage protection). It stands halfway up a slope above the riera de Cardona, next to an area of fields, in a strategic position. The site is documented since 997 and the castle since 1013, linked to the Riner and Sal·la de Conflent families; in 1142 a dispute over its ownership was settled between the lord Ponç de Cervera and the castellan Pere de Riner, and in 1322 Bernat de Riner paid homage to the parish priest of Solsona. Rectangular in plan, it preserves a tower about 18 metres high with walls 2 metres thick, a nave covered by a pointed vault, and an ashlar doorway with a semicircular arch.
Cross of the Oaks
Monument
A 17th-century boundary cross in Riner, standing atop a hill at the exit from Miracle towards Su, from where the sanctuary of Miracle and the turó de Sant Gabriel can be seen; before the fires of 1998 it remained hidden among the vegetation, but today it is clearly visible from the road. It has a flight of four steps on an octagonal base 1.40 metres across, a square plinth and a fluted column with eight flutes, fitted with iron wedges, with a total height of 2.20 metres. An environmental impact study linked to the works on the LV-3002 road located it in 1999.
Artisan Cheeses of the Solsonès
Curiosity
Artisan cheese-making tradition of the comarca, with raw sheep's milk cheeses such as those of the Santuari del Miracle and the Pult Rustic of Sant Llorenç de Morunys.
Riner Main Festival
Activity
The municipality of Riner, whose main parish is dedicated to Sant Martí, celebrates its festa major in summer; its settlements also have their own festivities, such as Su (15 August) or el Miracle (1 August).
The apparition of El Miracle
Historical milestone
On 3 August 1458, in the middle of a plague epidemic, two shepherds from the farmstead of la Cirosa said they had seen the Virgin in the meadow of Bassadòria, in the district of Riner. From that account was born one of the great sanctuaries of the Catalan interior.
Benedictine community of El Miracle
Historical milestone
In 1899 monks from Montserrat settled at the sanctuary of El Miracle and formed a Benedictine community that still attends it. The complex was declared a Cultural Asset of National Interest in 2008.
