What to see and do in Clariana de Cardener

Clariana de Cardener
Village
Clariana de Cardener is a municipality in the comarca of the Solsonès, in the province of Lleida, on the border with the Bages, situated on the banks of the Cardener river, which also gives its name to its castle. Until 1982 the municipality was called simply Clariana. It has 160 inhabitants (INE 2025) and comprises four population entities. Its eastern half, crossed by the Cardener and the Negro river, forms deep valleys not exceeding 600 metres of altitude, while the eastern strip and the southern end belong to the Solsonès plateau, with elevations of up to 768 metres. Within its territory lies the Sant Ponç reservoir, which occupies a large part of the Cardener's course as it passes through the municipality.
Castle of Clariana de Cardener
Monument
The castle of Clariana de Cardener, from the 11th century, crowns a hill above the plain of Flotats, where the Cardener and the Negre river meet, of great strategic importance: from there signals were sent to the castles of Navès, Solsona, Pinós and Cardona. The castles of Clariana and Cardona already appear in a document of 879-890, and it belonged to the viscountal family of Cardona. In 1010 the bishop of Vic, Arnulf, bequeathed his properties in Cardona and Clariana; in 1026 Viscount Bermon I left the castle to his brother Guillem, and in the early 13th century its lord was Arnau de Cardona. It preserves deteriorated walls mixed with later constructions, among them a keep above the old access gateway, next to the original church of Sant Serni, documented since 1035, today in ruins and abandoned in 1927.
Cardener River through the Solsonès
Nature
The river Cardener rises at the Fonts del Cardener, in the municipality of la Coma i la Pedra, at the foot of Port del Comte, at about 1,100 metres altitude; from its source it already carries a relatively significant flow, of about 0.33 cubic metres per second. In its initial stretch through the Solsonès it runs for nearly 39.8 kilometres, a little over 45% of its 87-kilometre total course, crossing the municipalities of la Coma, Guíxers, Navès, Lladurs and Olius before reaching Clariana de Cardener. Along the way it receives tributaries such as the aigua de Valls, les Set Riberetes and the riu Negre, which flows into Clariana de Cardener itself.
