Aspa
Village
Aspa is a municipality in the Segrià comarca, in the province of Lérida, situated on the border with the Garrigues and watered by the river Set, near whose cave paintings it lies. It has 233 inhabitants (INE 2025) and was under the lordship of the bishops of Lérida. Its economy combines dry farming, with olive trees, cereals and almond trees, and irrigated farming, with pig, sheep and poultry farming. In the old town, with houses from the 15th and 16th centuries, the remains of the Gothic palace that gives its name to the Aspa castle-palace are preserved, along with the church of Saint Julian, with its baroque façade, from which came an altarpiece by Jaume Ferrer II now in the Diocesan Museum of Lérida.
Castle-Palace of Aspa
Monument
A castle-palace in the municipality of Aspa, in the Segrià comarca, which was first an episcopal palace and later a rectory; it is declared bien cultural de interés nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection). The Bishop of Lérida had it built in the early 13th century, and the building, already mentioned in a document of 1215, was the bishops' usual residence until the 19th century. Of trapezoidal plan, it preserves a Gothic gallery overlooking the valley of the river Set, a cobbled courtyard with an old well, and the remains of a chapel with pointed arcades, largely destroyed in 1936. The town council acquired the building in 1989 through a donation from its last owner.
