What to see and do in el Cogul

El Cogul
Village
El Cogul is a municipality in the comarca of Les Garrigues, in the province of Lleida, on the border with the Segrià, famous for the cave paintings of the Roca dels Moros, discovered in 1908 and around 10,000 years old. In them Levantine art coexists, with figures of men, dancing women and hunting scenes of the Epipalaeolithic hunter groups, and Schematic art, with abstract lines and signs of the later producer groups, as well as Iberian and Latin inscriptions. Together with other sanctuaries in the province, such as those of Bellver de Cerdanya, Os de Balaguer or Artesa de Segre, it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1998 under the designation Rock Art of the Mediterranean Basin on the Iberian Peninsula. It has 163 inhabitants (INE 2025).
Castle of el Cogul
Monument
12th-century castle resettled by the House of Cervera, which passed to the crown and later to the Pallars family; the monastery of Poblet obtained the lordship in 1186 and bought the castle and the town in 1306 for 16,250 Jaca solidi, a dominion it held until the abolition of the lordships in 1835.
Walls of the Town of el Cogul
Monument
Remains of the walls of the fortified core of El Cogul, from the 12th century, today barely recognisable among the modern buildings next to the church. Declared an asset of national cultural interest, they are preserved beneath Vileta street —formerly called the castle street— and in the north-western area of the church square, the original historic centre of the settlement; they consist of large stone ashlars, well squared and joined with mortar. The place and castle of El Cogul paid tithes to the abbot of Poblet from 1186, and in 1306 abbot Pere d'Alferic received it through the sale by Bertran de Solanelles; in 1385 Jaume de Pallars sold his jurisdiction over El Cogul to the monastery, a transfer confirmed by Peter III and John I. The place belonged to Poblet until the abolition of the lordships in 1835.
Roca dels Moros of el Cogul
Curiosity
The Roca dels Moros is a rock shelter formed by a stone block that broke away on the right bank of the river Set, in the municipal district of El Cogul (Garrigues), declared an asset of national cultural interest. It contains one of the most outstanding examples of Levantine rock art in Catalonia: paintings by Epipalaeolithic hunters with hunting and dancing scenes -among them the emblematic 'phallic dance'- together with abstract manifestations of schematic art, around 6,000 years old, as well as Iberian and Roman inscriptions, since the place continued to be used as a sanctuary in those periods. Discovered in 1908, the group comprises 42 painted figures and 260 engraved elements, and forms part of the rock art of the Mediterranean Basin declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1998.

Cave paintings of the Cogul
Curiosity
Known as the Roca dels Moros, this rock shelter with Levantine and schematic rock art, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1998 as part of the rock art of the Mediterranean Basin, was discovered in 1908 by the village priest, Ramón Huguet. It contains 42 figures painted in brown, red, black and dark red tones, and 260 engraved elements; the best-known scene shows nine women dancing around a male figure with an oversized phallus. Inscriptions in Iberian script and votive texts in the Latin alphabet suggest the place functioned as a sanctuary for Iberians and Romans. It is today protected as a monument and archaeological zone, with an interpretation centre.
