Colonization village of Gimenells Historical milestone · Gimenells i el Pla de la Font, Segrià, Lleida Image of Gimenells i el Pla de la Font, not of the place itself. Gimenells is the core of a colonisation village built from 1939 onwards by the Instituto Nacional de Colonización to settle farmers on the lands that the new irrigation of the Aragón y Cataluña canal had brought under cultivation in the Segrià. The layout, devised by the architect Alejandro de la Sota, is regular, with the church and town hall at its centre and whitewashed houses of one or two storeys with two- or four-pitched roofs. The estate was bought in 1928 by Ramon Albó and expropriated in 1943 to build the village, officially inaugurated on 1 July 1947; three kilometres away, towards Sucs, the ruins of the old castle of Gimenells survive, an earlier population centre. In 1991 the municipality split off from Alpicat. 1939 Photo: AlbertRA (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Gimenells i el Pla de la Font
