Golmés
Village
Golmés is a municipality in the Plana de Urgel or Pla d'Urgell, in the province of Lleida, east of Mollerussa, with 1,909 inhabitants, set on a slight rise of 276 metres above a plain with no nearby rivers, irrigated by ditches. In Muslim times this plain was known as fahs Maxkijàn or pla del Mascançà, a place name that designated the villages between the Segre and the Corb before falling out of administrative use. The name Golmés is first documented in 1079, when the sons of the count of Barcelona granted the place, then called Golmers, to Berenguer Gombau, which suggests it was already a fortified enclave. The village is divided between the historic centre and the housing developments of el Codís and els Merlets.
