What to see and do in Barbens

Barbens
Village
Barbens is a municipality in the Pla d'Urgell, with the old castle and church of El Bullidor and a Templar commandery; it has 929 inhabitants (INE 2025) and has been irrigated since 1865 by the Canal d'Urgell, which today sustains apple and pear crops alongside pig farms. The village is already mentioned in 1099, under the name Barbene, in the consecration act of the church of Guissona; its jurisdiction, belonging to the Barrufell family, was ceded in 1166 to the Templar commandery of Gardeny, and in 1168 the independent commandery of Barbens was created, whose first commander was Ramon de Barrufell, former lord of the castle. After the Templars were suppressed in 1237, it continued as a Hospitaller commandery until the 19th century. The Festa de la Poma, in October, honours the municipality's main crop.
Castle and Church of el Bullidor
Monument
Castle and church of the Bullidor, declared a cultural property of national interest, in the municipal term of Barbens, beside the riera de Sant Marc. The castle, documented between 1365 and 1370, already in the 14th century, and which belonged to the Bosc and Copons families — the latter remodelled it, according to an inscription, in 1538 — today preserves very little: part of the façade with the main door with a voussoired arch and a window with pinnacles, and an empty interior. Attached to it stands the church of the Nativity of the Virgin, with a single nave twelve by six metres, built with the same ashlars and stonemasons' marks as the castle. It is covered with a barrel vault and has a square baptistery with a polychrome-interior dome, above which rises a lantern tower. The belfry is from a later period, probably the 19th century.
Commandery of Barbens
Monument
Templar commandery founded in 1168, whose first commander was Ramon de Barrufell, former lord of the castle; after the dissolution of the order in 1237 it passed to the Hospitallers, who controlled the territory until the 19th century.
Church of Barbens
Monument
Castell i església del Bullidor, a bien de interés cultural attached to the old castle documented since the 12th century, when Arnau de Formiguera ceded his possessions to the Templars; the commandery is documented from 1168 with Ramon de Barrufell as its first commander, passing to the Hospitallers in 1307. The complex is today in ruins, with consolidation work under way.
Barbens Winter Main Festival

Festivities of invierno de Barbens
Activity
The winter festivities of Barbens are celebrated in a municipality that preserves the old castle and the church of the Bullidor, remains of a Templar commandery: the commandery of Barbens was created in 1168 as an independent commandery, and Ramon de Barrufell, a former lord of the castle, was its first commander.
