What to see and do in Sopeira

Sopeira
Village
Sopeira is a municipality in southern Ribagorza comarca, in the province of Huesca, situated in the valley of the Noguera Ribagorzana river, next to the Mont-rebei gorge. Besides the capital, it groups together the settlements of Aulet, Pallerol and Santoréns, and has 84 inhabitants (INE 2025). Its municipal area holds the monastery of Santa María de Alaón, of which historical remains are preserved next to the village. The municipality's economy revolves around livestock farming and the small rural tourism drawn by the gorge. It celebrates its festivities on 7, 8 and 9 May, in honour of San Gregorio, and on the third weekend of August, with a fellowship dinner and popular dancing in the streets.
Mont-rebei Gorge
Nature
One of the most spectacular gorges in the Pyrenees, carved by the Noguera Ribagorzana between Aragon and Catalonia, on the boundary between the comarcas of Ribagorza and Pallars Jussà and the provinces of Huesca and Lérida. Its vertical walls reach up to 500 metres in height and, at its narrowest point, the passage narrows to barely 20 metres wide, within a protected area of 600 hectares acquired by the Fundació Territori i Paisatge in 1999. Mediterranean vegetation dominates the southern stretch and Eurosiberian vegetation the northern one, and among the fauna the bearded vulture, the golden eagle, the peregrine falcon and the otter stand out. Since 2013, walkways along the river, in the Montfalcó stretch, have allowed its four kilometres to be walked on foot.
Church of Sopeira
Monument
The church of Sopeira is the former monastery of Santa María de Alaón, reorganized as a monastic community in 806 by order of Count Begón of Toulouse under Abbot Crisógono; after Mendizábal's disentailment in 1836 it became the town's simple parish church.
The reorganisation of the monastery of Alaón
Historical milestone
Count Begón of Tolosa commissioned, in 806, the abbot Crisógono to restore the monastic life of Santa María de Alaón, the first written notice of the monastery; its cartulary, with more than three hundred documents, allows the reconstruction of the County of Ribagorza.
