Village
El Pont de Suert is the capital of the Alta Ribagorça, in the province of Lleida, and a starting point for adventure sports such as rafting and hiking. It has 2,381 inhabitants (INE 2025) and stretches along the left bank of the Noguera Ribagorzana river, between the lower Bohí valley to the north and the Viu valley to the south, at altitudes of between 2,627 and 830 metres. The old town preserves the plaça Mayor, the plaça del Mercadal, the old Romanesque church, altered in the 18th century, and the Palacio Abacial, a civil Gothic building restored in the late 20th century; in the newer district, a contemporary church was built in 1955, the work of engineer Eduardo Torroja. After the 1968 annexation of Llesp, Malpàs and Viu de Llevata, the municipality reached almost 150 km².
Activity
The Festa Major del Pont de Suert is held on the second Thursday of August (6-9 August in 2026), with havaneres, a craft and farmers' market, a correfoc and concerts. The village's festive calendar also includes the eve of San Juan with the Festa de les Falles and the Fira de la Girella.
Monument
Historic town hall of El Pont de Suert, capital of the Alta Ribagorça.
Activity
The most notable winter festival of the municipality of el Pont de Suert is actually that of Llesp, one of the villages annexed in 1968: there Sant Blai, on 3 February, is the main festival even though the parish is dedicated to another saint, and its 17th-18th-century reliquary is now kept in the Colección de Arte Sacro de la Ribagorça.
Nature
Stretch of the Noguera Ribagorçana river as it passes through Pont de Suert, in the Alta Ribagorça. It rises in the Barranc de Molières, in the Val d'Aran, and runs some 130 kilometers before flowing into the Segre near Corbins, in the Segrià. Along its course it is regulated by four reservoirs: Baserca, Escales, Canelles and Santa Anna.
Curiosity
Remains and place names linked to the presence of the Order of the Temple in the comarca of Alta Ribagorça, between El Pont de Suert and Vilaller.
Curiosity
Traditional stick dance native to the hamlet of Malpàs, in the term of Pont de Suert. Malpàs is the only town in the Alta Ribagorça that keeps this dance alive, which was traditionally performed on Saint Peter's day.
Activity
The Fira de la Girella is held every year on the third or fourth Sunday of October in the old town of Pont de Suert (Alta Ribagorça). It is recent in origin, dating from 2000, and aims to boost tourism and spread awareness of local traditions, with sections devoted to the girella and the Confraria de Sant Sebastià, old trades, commerce, livestock farming and historical exhibitions. The girella is the only sausage made with lamb as its base, with origins in the 15th century, traditional to the Ribagorça; formerly a dish reserved for special occasions and, in Pont de Suert, the signature dish of the Confraria de Sant Sebastià, patron of the town. During the fair a demonstration of how it is made is given and free tastings are offered. In 2025 it reached its twenty-fifth edition.
Activity
The Festa de Sant Sebastià del Pont de Suert originates in the Confraria de Sant Sebastià, founded in the municipality in 1586; the Llibre Vell of 1730 records its founding text and statutes. Recognised as a heritage festival of national interest, it is celebrated on 19, 20 and 21 January, with solemn masses, the singing of the goigs and the veneration of the saint's relic. Its central act is the procession on the 20th, the feast day of Sant Sebastià, which each year passes through a different neighbourhood in strict rotation and gathers a massive turnout from the town. The events include several ritual banquets of the Confraria and culminate on the 21st with the appointment of the new priors, who receive an apple in a traditional ceremony. It was only interrupted in 1937 and 1938, due to the Civil War.
Activity
El Pont de Suert has a genuine major winter celebration, though split between its villages: the Festa de Sant Sebastià in the main town (with its own Confraria) and the Festa Major de Sant Blai in Llesp, on 3 February, a village annexed in 1968.

Historical milestone
The county was formed in 872, when Ramon II of Pallars-Ribagorça took advantage of Toulousan weakness to seize the territory. It had its capital and episcopal see at Roda d'Isàvena, and in 1018 it passed to Pamplona until it was integrated into the kingdom of Aragon in 1043.
Historical milestone
The monastery of Santa Maria de Lavaix lies today in ruins, flooded for most of the year by the Escales reservoir, in the municipality of el Pont de Suert (Alta Ribagorça); when the reservoir level drops, it can be reached on foot from the southern mouth of the Lavaix tunnel, on the N-260 road. It was founded in 848 by Abbot Trasoad, who moved there the original monastery of San Julián de Sentís, to a place called Vilanova, possibly caves now submerged. It is the Catalan monastery that changed diocese the most times, passing through Urgell, the short-lived one of Pallars, Roda, Barbastro and finally Lérida; it was Benedictine around 947 and adopted the Cistercian rule in 1223 under Bishop Berenguer d'Erill. Abandoned after the 1835 disentailment, its archive suffered looting from the War of the Spanish Succession onward.
Monument
Promoted by the hydroelectric company ENHER, it was designed in 1952, built between 1953 and 1955 and consecrated on 7 September of that year. It was signed by the engineer Eduardo Torroja with the architect José Rodríguez Mijares, with pioneering laminar brick vaults.
Historical milestone
In 1968 three former municipalities merged with the comarca capital, which went from 12.72 to 148.1 square kilometres. The operation was a response to the depopulation of the mountain towns and explains the present dispersion of centres within the district.
Historical milestone
The comarca was created by law in 1988, segregating these three municipalities from the Pallars Jussà and recovering a historic entity recognised since 1939. With some 4,000 inhabitants in 427 square kilometres, it is the least populated in Catalonia.
Food and drink
Girella is the only sausage that uses lamb as its base, with origins going back to the 15th century in the mountain cooking of the Pallars and the Ribagorça. In the past it was a dish reserved for great occasions, such as weddings, and in el Pont de Suert it is the signature dish of the Confraria de Sant Sebastià, the town's patron confraternity. It is made from the lamb's offal -tripe, liver and heart- stuffed and cooked, and served sliced, either grilled or stewed with potato. Since the year 2000, on the third or fourth Sunday of October, the historic centre of el Pont de Suert holds the Fira de la Girella, with a live demonstration of its preparation and free tasting for the public.
Food and drink
Longaniza cured in a flattened shape, of lean pork and bacon with pepper, typical of the Pallars and the Ribagorça. It is cured in the dry cold of the Pyrenees and is eaten raw in thin slices, often with country bread and sheep's cheese.
