What to see and do in Gavet de la Conca

Gavet de la Conca
Village
Gavet de la Conca is a municipality in the comarca of Pallars Jussà, with the castles of Sant Gervàs, Montllor and Toló. It was formed in 1970 by the grouping of three former independent municipalities: Aransís, Sant Salvador de Toló and Sant Serni. The village of Gavet became the seat of the new municipality, despite never having been one before, thanks to its population and its greater proximity to Tremp. The present municipality, not very homogeneous, corresponds to three distinct geographical areas, bounded by the Gavet river to the east and north, the Montsec de Rúbies to the south and the municipality of Llimiana to the west. It brings together the settlements of Aransís, Sant Salvador de Toló, with the sanctuary of the Mare de Déu de Bonrepòs, and Sant Serni, Fontsagrada and Gavet.
Castle of Sant Gervàs
Monument
10th-century castle with 12th- and 14th-century expansions, triangular in plan with a cylindrical keep about 15 m high and three semicircular bastions at the corners, next to a 12th-century single-nave church. An assault by the troops of the count of Foix in the 14th century led to its final abandonment. A conservation project by the Consell Comarcal del Pallars has restored the main tower since 2007. A Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's top heritage-protection category).
Castle of Montllor
Monument
Also called the castell de l'Hostal Roig or dels Moros, it defended the pass through the Noguera valley; only a stretch of circular tower survives, about 2 m in diameter and 2.5 m at maximum height, built of medium rubble masonry with reddish lime mortar, along with a partly natural ditch and sockets cut into the rock for the outer walls. It is first documented in 1247, in connection with the path that the monks of the priory of Meià built that century to link up the area, but given its building technique — courses of medium ashlar bound with reddish mortar — it must have been raised around the year 1000, much earlier. Linked to the vanished monastery of Sant Privat, it stands about 100 m above L'Hostal Roig. Cultural Asset of National Interest.
Castle of Toló
Monument
Romanesque castle documented since the 11th century, possibly over an earlier late Roman or Visigothic fortification, which occupied a platform of about 72 x 95 m with walls up to 3 m high surviving in places; at its center stands the church of Sant Vicenç. Count Ermengol III handed it to Arnau Mir de Tost in 1058 after conquering it from the Arabs; it later passed to the monastery of Sant Pere d'Àger and to the viscounts of Vilamur, documented until the early 19th century.
Gavet de la Conca Main Festival
Activity
Gavet de la Conca does not celebrate a single municipal-wide festa major, but rather festes locals specific to each of the villages within its territory; the municipality also shares three historic common celebrations: the aplec of la Mare de Déu de Bonrepòs, the fira de l'Hostal Roig, and the aplec of Sant Salvador del Bosc.
