What to see and do in la Baronia de Rialb

La Baronia de Rialb
Village
La Baronia de Rialb is a municipality of the Noguera comarca, in the province of Lleida, which is home to the monastery of Santa María de Gualter and the old walled settlement of Politg. Its capital is Gualter; formerly it was the Torre de Rialb. The municipality is structured around the Rialb river, between its middle and lower stretches, and extends from the left bank of the Segre to the Grau de Moles mountain range, at the Cogulló de Sant Quiri, 1355 m above sea level. Part of the Pre-Pyrenees, it borders the Alt Urgell and Pallars Jussà, has a scattered population and rugged relief, with the status of a high-mountain municipality and a continental Mediterranean climate with an arid tendency. The earliest traces of human activity in the Rialb valley correspond to two prehistoric sites.
Monastery of Santa Maria de Gualter
Monument
The monastery of Santa María de Gualter stands at the entrance to the village of Gualter, capital of the municipality of la Baronia de Rialb (Noguera), and is declared a bien cultural de interés nacional (Spain's highest level of heritage protection). The Rialb region already had religious buildings by the end of the 9th century, and remains from the end of the 11th century are preserved in the monastery's fabric. Its cloister was restored and can now be visited with a guide. The church was a three-nave building with a large central apse and two side apsidioles, covered with a barrel vault resting on three transverse arches; the transept led to an octagonal cimborio with a dome on squinches. In 1938, during the Civil War, an explosion destroyed the vaults, the dome and the central apse; the 1999 restoration changed the appearance of the complex.
Castle of la Donzell de Sant Cristòfol
Monument
Remains of the castle of la Donzell, in the municipal term of la Baronia de Rialb, Noguera, documented since 1190. It formed part of an old monastic endowment, first of the monastery of Olius and later of the canons of Castellbó. Of the stronghold, remains of a tower and medieval walls survive, 1.5 kilometres from the depopulated hamlet of Sant Cristòfol de la Donzell; nearby stands the Romanesque church of Sant Pere de la Donzell, from the 11th century, now deconsecrated. The complex is protected as a bien cultural de interés nacional (Spain's highest level of heritage protection), with the code BIC RI-51-0006266.
Politg
Monument
Politg is an old medieval closed village (poble clos), today a population entity of the municipality of la Baronia de Rialb, in the Noguera region. In the mid-19th century it had only two houses grouped next to the parish church, besides other dwellings scattered across the term, according to Pascual Madoz's Diccionario. In 2023 it had 17 registered inhabitants, of whom 13 lived in the settlement itself, reflecting the depopulation suffered by this settlement over the last two centuries.
