Vilanova de l'Aguda
Village
Vilanova de l'Aguda is a Lleida municipality created in 1840 by the union of the castle of l'Aguda, the barony of Ribelles and the quadra of la Figuera, and today groups together five settlements: the town of the same name, l'Alzina, Guardiola, Ribelles and Vilalta. It preserves the 11th-century castle of Ribelles, and a four-arch stone bridge built in 1817-1818, as well as the medieval old quarter around the castle of l'Aguda, next to which stands the Romanesque chapel of San Miguel de Valldàries. Its coat of arms, approved in 1992, shows a silver saltire on azure with a gules rose, symbols of its patron saints, the Virgen del Rosario and San Andrés. It lives from dry-farming agriculture and livestock raising, and has around 192 inhabitants.
