What to see and do in Cabanabona

Cabanabona
Village
Cabanabona is a municipality of barely 70 inhabitants in the interior of the Noguera comarca (Lleida), at 421 metres above sea level, formed by the settlement of Cabanabona and the hamlet of Vilamajor, between the valleys of the Llobregós and the Sió river. It reached its maximum population, 477 inhabitants, in 1860, and has been declining ever since to its current figure. Its parish church, dedicated to St John the Baptist, is of Romanesque origin and was completely rebuilt in 1686; the village also preserves some 17th-century buildings with Renaissance decoration. In Vilamajor stands a castle documented since 1040, which belonged to Arnau de Vergós and to the Alemany family, next to the Romanesque church of Santa María. The economy is still based on dry-farming agriculture, with cereals, almond trees and vineyards.
Tower of Vilamajor
Monument
Well-preserved 11th-century circular tower, corresponding to the old castle of Vilamajor; the fortress is documented since 1040 as part of the defenses of the county of Urgell.
