Monastery of Santa Maria de Gualter Monument · la Baronia de Rialb, Noguera, Lleida The monastery of Santa María de Gualter stands at the entrance to the village of Gualter, capital of the municipality of la Baronia de Rialb (Noguera), and is declared a bien cultural de interés nacional (Spain's highest level of heritage protection). The Rialb region already had religious buildings by the end of the 9th century, and remains from the end of the 11th century are preserved in the monastery's fabric. Its cloister was restored and can now be visited with a guide. The church was a three-nave building with a large central apse and two side apsidioles, covered with a barrel vault resting on three transverse arches; the transept led to an octagonal cimborio with a dome on squinches. In 1938, during the Civil War, an explosion destroyed the vaults, the dome and the central apse; the 1999 restoration changed the appearance of the complex.
