What to see and do in l'Albi

L'Albi
Village
L'Albi is a municipality in Les Garrigues, in the province of Lleida, in the south-east of the comarca, with 764 inhabitants. It preserves prehistoric rock shelters with engravings and paintings, such as the Balma dels Punts, up to 10,000 years old, and the Vall de la Coma, with paintings of Schematic Art declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1998. The town sits at the foot of a 12th-century medieval castle, enlarged at the end of the 15th and turned into a Renaissance palace. The old quarter preserves the arcaded square and Carrer Major, with stone houses, and the old Jewish quarter, entered through a 14th-century Gothic arch. The parish church of Santa María, with a Baroque façade and three naves, dates from the 18th century and houses the crypt of the barons of Albí.
Castle of l'Albi
Monument
Castle of medieval origin, from the 12th century, replaced in the late 16th by a Renaissance palace with a vaulted doorway with decorated keystones; beneath its foundations remains of an Iberian settlement have been found, currently under excavation.
Rock Shelter of els Punts
Curiosity
The Balma dels Punts is a rock shelter in the municipality of l'Albi (Garrigues, Lleida) with rock art protected as a World Heritage Site within the Rock Art of the Mediterranean Basin. It lies in the partida of Tarròs, at the foot of a limestone hill, in a balma some ten metres long and three metres high, mushroom-shaped due to the erosion of the ceiling and walls. The pictorial group brings together eleven representations: a deer with large antlers, a rough quadruped or goat, strokes, remains and, above all, more than 400 dots in nine lines, one of the most important such groups in Catalonia, combining the naturalistic and schematic styles. Above, some engravings can also be seen, perhaps medieval. The paintings were discovered in 1995 by some hunters.
L'Albi Main Festival

Fair of els Caragols
