Tarrés
Village
Tarrés is a municipality in the Catalan comarca of les Garrigues, in the province of Lleida, on the border with that of Tarragona; in the mid-19th century it was called Torres. Before the Reconquest it was part of the Arab wilaya of Siurana. Its territory was granted by Ramon Berenguer IV on 26 July 1149, who entrusted the repopulation to Ramon de Boixadors and his wife Ermessenda on condition of building a fortress there; in the mid-13th century it passed under the domain of the monastery of Poblet, although the monastery did not obtain full jurisdiction until 1367. Materials for the palace of King Martin the Humane at Poblet were quarried from a nearby quarry. It has 126 inhabitants. Its parish church, dedicated to Santa Maria, is neoclassical with a baroque nave and was built in 1799 over an earlier one.
Castle of Tarrés
Monument
The castle of Tarrés, in the Lleida comarca of les Garrigues, is an asset of national cultural interest of which nothing remains standing today: on its site, on a rock that may have served as the base of the fortress, stands an old electrical transformer, and to the west one can make out the moat that separated the fortification's spur from the rest of the hill. Ramon Berenguer IV granted the territory to Ramon de Boixadors and his wife Ermessenda on 26 July 1149 on condition of building a fortress there and repopulating the area; the first document mentioning the castle dates from 1226. In 1245, in the mid-13th century, it passed into the hands of the monastery of Poblet, on which it depended until the 19th century.
