What to see and do in el Vilosell

El Vilosell
Village
El Vilosell is a municipality of 177 inhabitants at the south-eastern end of the comarca of les Garrigues, on the border with the Conca de Barberà, on the highest part of the Garrigues plateau, on the slopes of the serra de la Llena. The first document citing the place, using the form «Velosel», dates from 1067. After the Reconquest, the castle of El Vilosell was built, around which the settlement grew, with a circular layout and cobbled streets, formerly walled and raised on a hill. The municipality was the birthplace of the bishop Josep Caixal i Estradé (1803-1879), co-prince of Andorra.
Castle of el Vilosell
Monument
A castle crowning the circular, formerly walled core of El Vilosell, on the border of les Garrigues with the Conca de Barberà. Its first documentary mention is from 1067, as a Muslim settlement dependent on Siurana; after the conquest of Lleida in 1149 it was colonised on a feudal basis, with population confirmed in 1184. In 1179 Alfonso I handed it to Guillem de Cervera, who ceded half of it to Pere Besora as castellan; the latter donated it in 1196 to the monastery of Poblet, which in 1217 bought the full lordship of the place. Remodelled in the 16th century, from the 18th century onward its stones were reused for the village houses, so that today only the southern slope survives, popularly known as l'Enjuba, with a lookout point built in 1991.

Wines of the Garrigues subzone
Food and drink
The eastern sector of the comarca, on the foothills of the sierra de la Llena, forms one of the subzones of the DO Costers del Segre. Its wineries make reds of garnacha, cariñena and foreign varieties on poor soils at altitude.
