Cervià de les Garrigues
Village
Cervià de les Garrigues is a municipality in the comarca of Les Garrigues, with about 640 inhabitants, founded in 1202 at 444 metres altitude, in the upper valley of the riu Set. Its territory includes the deserted settlement of Vallxeca and the old settlement of les Besses, of which the ruins of a feudal castle survive, with a charter of settlement from 1225. It lives from dry-farming agriculture — cereals, olives and almonds — and preserves 721 hectares of white pine forest in its hills. It preserves the parish church of Sant Miquel Arcàngel, rebuilt in the 18th century, and a Casa de la Vila from 1912, the work of the Lleida municipal architect Francesc de Paula Morera i Gatell. In 2012 it was the first municipality in the province of Lleida to declare itself Territori Català Lliure (Free Catalan Territory).
Castle of les Besses
Monument
13th-century castle on a rocky promontory, documented since 1151 and resettled in 1225 by Arnau Punyet and his wife Marquesa with five families obliged to fortify the place; in the 14th century it passed under the dominion of the monastery of Poblet, which held it until the 19th-century disentailments. After the War of the Spanish Succession its inhabitants moved to neighboring Cervià. Today it is an archaeological complex with remains of the castle, a mill, and a church, with the best-preserved stretch of wall standing 1.5 m high.
Cervià de les Garrigues Main Festival
Activity
Festa Major de Cervià de les Garrigues, a municipality in the Lleida comarca of Garrigues devoted mainly to dryland farming, with crops of cereals, olives and almonds. It features the town's giants, Miquel and Maria de les Besses, christened on 3 October 2015 and built by Jordi Arnau Espuga: they represent a peasant man and woman as a symbol of the youth and labour of the locality. The giant takes its name from the town's patron saint and the giantess from the hermitage of Santa Maria de les Besses.
