What to see and do in Vilanova de Prades

Vilanova de Prades
Village
Vilanova de Prades is a mountain municipality of the Conca de Barberà, in the province of Tarragona, whose territory comprises the northern slope of the Muntanyes de Prades. It has 111 inhabitants (INE 2025) and is already mentioned in the 1159 charter of settlement of Prades; in 1324 it was incorporated into the county of Prades, after having been ceded on condition of building a fortress and repopulating the place. It lives off the growing of hazelnut, chestnut and almond trees, and modest tourism with a rural guesthouse, hostel and campsite. It preserves the parish church of Sant Salvador, Baroque, from the 18th century, and houses from the 16th to the 18th centuries with voussoir doorways, as well as the hermitage of Saint Anthony of Padua, which tradition attributes to three women who were saved from the plague.

Nature
The Muntanyes de Prades, on whose northern slope lies the municipality of Vilanova de Prades (Conca de Barberà), form a massif of some 307 km² spread across the comarcas of the Conca de Barberà, Alt Camp, Baix Camp, Les Garrigues and Priorat, with nineteen municipalities. Its highest peak is the Tossal de la Baltasana or Tossal de la Torre, at 1,202 metres. It is formed mainly of limestone and dolomite, with abundant shales and conglomerates, and it is the source of the rivers Francolí, Brugent, Glorieta, Siurana and Prades. The vegetation includes holm oak woods, dense holm oak groves, Valencian oak, red pine and pinassa pine at medium elevations, and it is notable for the presence, unique in Catalonia, of colonies of Pyrenean oak at 900 metres of altitude.
