Fulleda
Village
Fulleda is a small rural municipality at the eastern end of Les Garrigues, in the province of Lleida, bordering the Conca de Barberà; its urban centre, at 560 metres altitude, sits at the confluence of the valleys of la Granada and els Escortals. Ceded in 1149 by Ramon Berenguer IV to Ramon de Boixadors, it passed through donations to the monastery of Santa Maria de Poblet, which dominated it until the 19th century. The War of the Spanish Succession reduced the village to 20 houses, and in the 18th century it grew strongly thanks to olive growing, reaching its maximum, 500-600 inhabitants, in the mid-19th century; today it has 87 (INE 2025). A dry-farming area, with vines, olives and almonds, it preserves the church of Santa Maria, Romanesque with Cistercian influence, and a monument from 1986 to Agustina de Aragón, whose parents were from the town.
Church of Fulleda
Monument
The church of Santa Maria de Fulleda, located in the centre of the town, was a suffragan of the parish of l'Espluga Calba and, like it, was dependent on the archbishopric of Tarragona until the 15th century; in 1772 it became a perpetual vicarage. The original building, from the late 13th century, is Romanesque of Cistercian influence, with a single nave with side chapels and a pointed barrel vault; it preserves the old Romanesque portal, now blocked up, and three funerary steles in the bell-gable. It was modified between the 18th and 19th centuries with Baroque and Neoclassical additions, including the current portal, from 1739, on the west gable, and the chancel, rebuilt in 1847. In 1947 the painter Pere Martí decorated the altar with borders and marble imitations that are still preserved.
