Puigverd de Lleida
Village
Puigverd de Lleida is a municipality of the Segrià, on the boundary with Les Garrigues and the Plana de Urgel, at 219 metres above sea level and very close to the Lleida capital; it numbers around 1,400 inhabitants. It originated in an old Saracen watchtower, and during the Christian conquest the nobleman Pere de Puigverd helped in the taking of the territory, for which he received the lands the municipality occupies today. The Madrid-Barcelona high-speed line and the AP-2 motorway run through its municipal area. Its main festival coincides with Sant Jordi (Saint George), on 23 April: the patron saint is taken out in procession and, on the nearest weekend, the village turns into a medieval market with dances, archery and a night-time re-enactment of the legend of Sant Jordi performed by more than three hundred amateur actors.
