What to see and do in Castelldans

Castelldans
Village
Castelldans is a town in the comarca of Les Garrigues, in the province of Lleida, situated in its western part, on the border with the Segrià. It preserves the ruins of its old castle and the hermitage of the Mare de Déu de Montserrat, as well as a Museu de l'Oli i del Món Rural devoted to traditional agricultural life. In the mid-19th century, when it already had its own town council, it had 508 inhabitants; it reached 1,508 in 1920 and today has 952 (INE 2025). Until the second half of the 20th century the municipality was known by the Castilianised forms Castelldasens and Castelldáns.
Castle of Castelldans
Monument
Fortress of Andalusi origin with earliest mentions in the 11th century, today in ruins: two rectangular cisterns survive, one with its barrel vault, stretches of wall, and foundations of square towers about 3.75 x 1.25 m. It passed into Christian hands in 1120, when the governor of Lleida ceded it to Count Ramon Berenguer III; from 1412 it belonged to the Charterhouse of Escaladei. A Civil War bunker and machine-gun nest damaged part of the structure.
Castelldans Main Festival
Activity
The main festival of Castelldans.
Dry-stone construction, intangible heritage
Historical milestone
In 2018 UNESCO recognised dry stone construction as intangible cultural heritage. In les Garrigues that technique left field margins, vaulted huts and cisterns raised without mortar by the peasants to gain ground on the dry farmland.
