L'Espluga Calba
Village
L'Espluga Calba is a municipality in Les Garrigues, on the border with the Urgell and the province of Tarragona, which received a charter of settlement in 1148, during the conquest of Tortosa by Ramon Berenguer IV. Its name refers to caves dug into the rock, spelunca in Latin, which still survive in the town and were used as stables or cellars, with likely prehistoric settlement. The bottom of the valley is devoted to growing vines and cereals, and the hillsides are terraced with olives and almonds; a cooperative produces oil under the designation of origin Oli de les Garrigues, and since 1969 a cooperative textile factory making knitted goods has been in operation. The village castle, with Gothic windows, was the seat of a hospitaller commandery until the end of the 18th century.
Castle of l'Espluga Calba
Monument
Gothic castle, square in plan with mullioned windows and round arches, rebuilt by the Hospitallers in the 15th century over an old Arab fortification resettled in 1148 under a charter from Ramon Berenguer IV; the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem held it from 1405 to the 19th century. Between 1877 and 1963 it housed a school of Dominican nuns; acquired by the municipality in 1966, it is now open to visitors and houses a room on the Order of Malta and a museum of peasant life.
