What to see and do in Vilallonga de Ter

Vilallonga de Ter
Village
Vilallonga de Ter is a municipality of the Ripollès, in the Vall de Camprodon, between Setcases and Camprodon, crossed by the Ter river, along whose banks stand the houses that gave the village its name; it includes the villages of La Roca de Pelancà, Tregurà de Dalt, Tregurà de Baix and Abella. It was called simply Vilallonga until the 1916 reform, and today has 395 inhabitants at an altitude of 1,067 metres. Known since 1011, and its church of Sant Martí since 1183, the seigneurial domain belonged to the Descatllar family, lords of the Catllar castle, on a crag by the Ter. Within its territory operates one of the first modernista hydroelectric power plants in Catalonia, built between 1903 and 1909, and it also preserves the Romanesque churches of Santa Llúcia d'Abella and Sant Julià de Tregurà.
Sant Martí de Vilallonga
Monument
Sant Martí de Vilallonga is the parish church of Vilallonga de Ter, in the Camprodon valley, between Setcasas and Camprodon. It has been documented since 1183, when Arnau Descatllar ceded his rights over it to the bishop of Girona, although the place is already mentioned in 1017 among the properties that Pope Benedict VIII confirmed to the monastery of Camprodon. Of its original three-naved basilical structure, an uncommon typology in the Ripollès, only the main apse, a small apsidiole and part of the north and south walls survive, since the 1784 enlargement reduced it to a single nave with side chapels. The apse, of well-cut ashlar, displays on the outside a frieze of arcading on corbels and a sawtooth cornice beneath the eaves.
Castle of la Roca de Pelancà
Monument
The castle of la Roca de Pelancà, at 1,040 m where the Abella stream joins the Ter, documented since 1060 and active until the 15th century, was a modest watchtower-fortification now reduced to a few courses of ashlars among the houses of the settlement, which were built anchored to the rock itself; next to it stands the small Romanesque church of the Mare de Déu de la Pietat. An Asset of National Cultural Interest (BCIN 1774-MH).
La Sala of Vilallonga de Ter
Monument
A medieval stronghold of almost square plan, with an exterior length of 17.30 metres per side, in a meadow beside the river Ter, in Vilallonga de Ter. It replaced as the centre of the district the vanished castle of Catllar, on which it had depended, and was the residence of the Descatllar family, lords of the place; the earliest records date from 1261, when Galceran Descatllar ceded it, together with the castle of Catllar, to his son Ramon. In 1362 King Peter the Ceremonious authorised Ponç Descatllar to fortify it as a refuge for the men of the district in time of war. The earthquakes of 1427 and 1428 damaged it, and it was rebuilt with the authorisation of Queen Maria; in 1488 the Descatllar family moved their residence to Ripoll. It retains a central courtyard and two distinct building phases visible in the thickness of its walls.
