What to see and do in Pardines

Pardines
Village
Pardines is a mountain municipality in the Ripollès district, in the north of the Alt Ter region, with 168 inhabitants and its village at an altitude of 1,226 metres; it is the main settlement of the Vall del Segadell, below the Puig Cerverís, which reaches 2,207 metres. Its name comes from the Latin parietina, meaning walls, alluding to the ruins of an ancient structure on the site, and it is documented from the year 839, in the consecration charter of the Seu d'Urgell. It was successively held by the viscounts of Cerdanya, the lords of Sales, the monastery of Sant Martí del Canigó and the counts of Barcelona, and later became the lordship of Eiximèn Peres Roís de Corella, first Count of Cocentaina. It preserves the churches of Santa Magdalena and Sant Esteve de Pardines, as well as the chapels of Sant Martí and El Roser.
Sant Esteve de Pardines
Monument
Sant Esteve de Pardines, declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Spain's highest level of heritage protection), is the complex formed by the apse converted into a tower and a three-arched gateway onto which a street of the village opens, to which it is attached on its south side. From the original Romanesque church survive the apse, a splayed window and corbels; in the 13th century the apse was transformed into a defence tower, whose old arrow-slits can still be seen in the lower part, today incorporated into a dwelling built on top of it. The tower has been consolidated and restored, but the gateway, with one of its arches almost walled up due to stability problems, still shows damage. According to tradition, this complex was the original entrance to Pardines by the old royal road from Ribes to Camprodon.
Castle of Pardines
Monument
Of the old walled enclosure known as the castle or 'força de Pardines' only a stretch of wall with arrow-slits survives in the plaça del Pedró and another in the carrer Major; the walls, from the early 14th century, were built when Pardines belonged to the kingdom of Mallorca.
