What to see and do in Llanars

Llanars
Village
Llanars is a municipality in the Vall de Camprodon, in the Ripollès district, province of Gerona, with its Romanesque church of Sant Esteve as its parish church, and 516 inhabitants. It stretches along a short section of the Ter valley, between Camprodon and Vilallonga, as far as the confluence with the Ribera de Faitús, which rises at the Puig Sistra, at 1,988 metres, on the boundary with Setcases and Molló. The place name is recorded from 1027, and in 1130 Ramón Berenguer III granted the tithes of the area to the monastery of Ripoll, although royal jurisdiction continued to fall to the veguer of Camprodon. In 1689 the Duke of Noailles set up his headquarters here during the French siege of Camprodon. The village commemorates on a plaque the 1944 crash of an American twin-engined aircraft at the Puig de les Agudes.
Sant Esteve de Llanars
Monument
A 12th-century Romanesque church located in the centre of Llanars, on the Plaça de l'Om, within the Vall de Camprodon. The first written reference dates from 10 November 1168, the date of its consecration by the bishop of Girona Guillem de Peratallada. It has a single nave with two rear chapels that give it the shape of a Latin cross, covered with a pointed-arch vault, and a semicircular apse offset towards the northeast. The main portal, a voussoired round arch, rests on four columns with decorated capitals, and the south and east walls show Lombard ornamentation. Inside is preserved the polychrome wooden altar frontal dedicated to Sant Esteve, from the second half of the 12th century, the only example of its kind preserved in situ in the region.
