What to see and do in Ogassa

Ogassa
Village
Ogassa is a mountain municipality in the Ripollès district, in Gerona, north of Sant Joan de les Abadesses, on the southern slopes of the Serra Cavallera and the Taga range, with a tradition of coal mining. It has 222 inhabitants. From the Middle Ages it preserves Romanesque churches such as Sant Martí d'Ogassa, from the 11th century, then dependent on the monastery of Sant Joan de les Abadesses; near the summit of Sant Amand the remains survive of a fortification already mentioned in 1024. In the 19th century the discovery of coal brought mining to the municipality, with the first mine opened in 1838; the ore was carried to the Toralles station and from there, by rail, to the port of Barcelona. The operation continued for almost 130 years, until the last mine closed in 1967.

The first mine opened in 1838 and for a hundred and thirty years the coal of Surroca fed Catalan industry; the village passed fifteen hundred inhabitants and was left with little more than two hundred after the closure.
