What to see and do in Molló

Molló
Village
Molló is a high-mountain municipality in the Ripollès district, in the province of Gerona, situated at the northern end of the Vall de Camprodon, on the border with France and with the district of La Garrotxa. It stands at an altitude of 1,181 metres and has 351 inhabitants, spread across nine population centres, including Espinavell. The village is documented from the year 936, the date its Romanesque church of Santa Cecília was consecrated, and its name -from the Latin Mollione- refers to the abundance of boundary-marker-shaped stones, not, as is often believed, to its status as a border town, which postdates the 1659 Treaty of the Pyrenees. The village, laid out radially around the Plaça Major, also has the Molló Park ski resort.
Santa Cecília de Molló
Monument
Santa Cecília de Molló is the parish church of the hamlet of Molló, in the Vall de Camprodon, built between the 11th and 12th centuries, a notable example of Pyrenean Romanesque architecture. Because of its nave and its position in the valley of the river Ritort, it is a recognisable landmark in the landscape. It has a single nave with a pointed vault and a semicircular apse narrower than the nave, with a window adorned by two archivolts on small columns with capitals carved with plant motifs and anthropomorphic figures. The portal, on the south wall, opens after six steps and preserves an old serpent-shaped bolt, beneath a frieze carved with the seven deadly sins. Notable is the bell tower on the north wall, whose base dates from the 11th century and whose four upper storeys date from the 12th. The parish has been documented since 936.
Costabona
Nature
The Costabona is a granite massif of 2,465 metres that crowns the Pyrenean ridge line between the Ter valley, in the Ripollès, and that of the Tech, in the French Vallespir, and forms the last great peak of that ridge heading east. On its southern slope rise the Vall-llobre and Ritort torrents, tributaries of the Ter, while the northern slope overlooks the Haut Vallespir and the Bains de la Preste. Near the summit, at about 2,300 metres, lie the Costabona mines, worked for scheelite, and at the head of the Vall-llobre the refuge that bears its name. From the summit, marked by a geodesic marker and several crosses, a wide panorama opens out taking in the Gulf of Roses, the Canigou and the peaks of the Ulldeter cirque; it is one of the peaks most frequented by hikers in the area and is included in the FEEC's list of the 100 cims.
Artisan mountain cheeses
Food and drink
The dairies of the high valleys work with cow's, sheep's and goat's milk from the flocks that graze the mountain meadows; cured tomas, soft-paste cheeses and recuits of pastoral tradition exist side by side.
