Village
Sant Miquel de Campmajor is a scattered mountain municipality in the comarca of the Pla de l'Estany, in the province of Girona, with several castles and towers across its territory, which extends along the valley of the riera de Campmajor, from its source beneath the sierra de Trentinyà to its confluence with the Ritort. Besides the capital, it includes the settlements of Briolf, Falgons, Sant Martí de Campmajor and Ventajol. The earliest records of the valley date from the year 878, when King Louis the Stammerer confirmed Abbot Ansemund's possession of the cel·la of Sant Martí. In the mid-20th century a reservoir was planned on the Ser river, abandoned once it was found that the gypsum soil would let the water seep through. Notable features are Falgons castle and the hermitage of Sant Nazari. It has 258 inhabitants (INE 2025).
Monument
Falgons Castle, in the municipality of Sant Miquel de Campmajor, in the Pla de l'Estany, was the centre of the former barony of Falgons, held from the 12th century by the Cartellà family. The settlement of Falgons, made up of scattered farmhouses with no urban core, is already recorded between 898 and 917, and was an independent municipality until, in the 19th century, its territory was merged into that of Sant Miquel de Campmajor. The castle, remodelled between the 13th and 18th centuries, has a square plan with a tower at each corner, three of them restored, and a voussoired round-arched gateway topped by the coat of arms of the Cartellà family; one of the towers remains partly ruined. Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (BCIN 1512-MH), Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection.
Monument
The Castell d'en Roca stands by the Ser river, near a waterfall and its confluence with the Ritort, in the large and scattered municipal area of Sant Miquel de Campmajor. Documented since the 12th century -the earliest reference may be a Ramon de Roca recorded in 1174- its lords were the Roca family and, later, a Pere de Prat de Girona, recorded in 1320. It is in fact a fortified house, today resembling a farmhouse after later alterations: a rectangular plan with a small inner courtyard, a ground floor and one upper storey, and a voussoired round-arched gateway; on the upper floor a twin window opens, without a capital and with floral decoration on the impost. The tower, attached to the south façade and well preserved, is the oldest element of the complex, in late Romanesque style, from the late 13th or early 14th century. It is a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (BCIN 1515-MH), Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection.
Monument
A military optical telegraph tower, also called Can Ginestar, built from 1848 during the Matiners War as part of the Girona-Olot line and in service until 1862; of square plan with a battered base, arrow-slits framed in brick and a perimeter moat, it retains three of its four sides and is declared an Asset of National Cultural Interest.
Monument
The Torre de Brió, or de Briolf, is a mas-tower (fortified farmhouse-tower) of Romanesque origin (11th-13th centuries), of square plan, situated west of the church of Brió, in Sant Miquel de Campmajor (Pla de l'Estany), declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection). It consists of a ground floor and a first floor; the original upper part has not survived. A round arch is preserved on the ground floor, and the one on the upper floor is damaged. It had two doors with triangular lintels, one facing east and the other, much altered, facing south; on the west and north façades of the upper floor there are three well-spaced windows. The walls are of ashlar which in some places reach a metre in thickness. This type of building, called a mas-torre, was raised by the lower nobility or the upper peasantry, and was often inhabited by the bailiff of the lordship.

Food and drink
Buckwheat has continued to be grown only in the Pla de l'Estany and the Garrotxa, with local varieties such as the pota de gall; its dark flour gives the farinetes, a porridge eaten with milk or with pork rinds.
