What to see and do in Sant Aniol de Finestres

Sant Aniol de Finestres
Village
Sant Aniol de Finestres is a scattered mountain municipality in the south of the Garrotxa comarca, in the province of Girona, within the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone natural park, between the Finestres and Medes ranges, on the right bank of the Llémena stream. The village stands at 415 metres and has 382 inhabitants; it is organised into the settlements of Sant Aniol de Finestres, Sant Esteve de Llémena, La Barroca and Les Carreres. Its earliest reference dates from 906, when the castle of Finestres is mentioned, and in 947 the church of Santa María was consecrated in that fortress; the municipality belonged to the barony of Santa Pau. It preserves several Romanesque churches, such as those of San Miguel de Bustins and San Juan de Medes, as well as the parish church of Sant Aniol, dated to 992.
Castle of Finestres
Monument
Finestres castle, at 960 m and documented since 947, retains barely any remains beyond a possible cistern and a stairway built against the rock; the Porqueres family held its castellany from at least the 9th century, until the 15th-century earthquakes forced the manorial residence to move to the valley of Sant Iscle de Colltort. An Asset of National Cultural Interest (BCIN 1422-MH).
Iberian Settlement of Puig Castellar
Curiosity
An Iberian site at the foot of the Serra de Finestres, discovered in 1965, with the remains of a fortified settlement of the 3rd century BC and finds of Iberian and Emporitan pottery and Greco-Italic amphorae.
