Tower of Brió Monument · Sant Miquel de Campmajor, Pla de l'Estany, Girona The Torre de Brió, or de Briolf, is a mas-tower (fortified farmhouse-tower) of Romanesque origin (11th-13th centuries), of square plan, situated west of the church of Brió, in Sant Miquel de Campmajor (Pla de l'Estany), declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection). It consists of a ground floor and a first floor; the original upper part has not survived. A round arch is preserved on the ground floor, and the one on the upper floor is damaged. It had two doors with triangular lintels, one facing east and the other, much altered, facing south; on the west and north façades of the upper floor there are three well-spaced windows. The walls are of ashlar which in some places reach a metre in thickness. This type of building, called a mas-torre, was raised by the lower nobility or the upper peasantry, and was often inhabited by the bailiff of the lordship.
