Mieres
Village
Mieres is a municipality in the southeast of the Garrotxa (Girona), on the border with the Pla de l'Estany, crossed by the Ritort river, at 286 metres above sea level. Documented since the year 834, it has 369 inhabitants today. In 1484 it was the scene of the so-called uprising of Mieres, during the Remensa war, when the peasants refused to pay excessive dues to their lords; it also saw clashes during the Peninsular War, in 1812. It preserves the churches of Sant Pere, Baroque from the 17th century, and Santa Maria del Freixe, Romanesque and documented since the year 1000, as well as that of Sant Andreu de Ruïtlles and the fortified farmhouse of Can Gou. The economy is based on dryland farming, with vines and olives, cattle farming and a small dairy industry.
