What to see and do in Crespià

Crespià
Village
Crespià is a municipality in Girona, on the border between the comarques of the Pla de l'Estany, the Garrotxa and the Alt Empordà, on the banks of the Fluvià river. Besides the capital, it includes the settlements of Llavanera, Pedrinyà, Pompià and Portell, at 138 metres above sea level. Within its territory lie the Incarcal palaeontological sites, from the lower Pleistocene, among the most important on the Iberian Peninsula for the quantity and good condition of their fossils, such as those of the great sabre-toothed cat found there. It preserves the parish church of Santa Eulàlia, of Romanesque origin, and outside the settlement the ruined hermitage of Sant Bartomeu de Portell and the cave hermitage of Sant Miquel de la Roca, on a cliff. In the mid-19th century it had 452 inhabitants; today it has 254 (2025).
Santa Eulàlia de Crespià
Monument
Church of Romanesque origin from the 12th century, enlarged in the 16th century with two side aisles; it preserves the original portal with four receding round arches. It was first dedicated to Saint Mark before passing to Saint Eulalia, a dedication already documented in 1151. In 1889 the parish priest Joaquim Dalmau commissioned the decoration of the apse ceiling with mural paintings by Joaquim Murta, showing angels and twenty-two saints around the symbol of divinity: it is the only surviving example of this Girona painter's mural work. In 1936 the 1626 main altarpiece and other Baroque side altarpieces were lost, as was a Gothic marble one; the building was consolidated and restored between 1973 and 1975 by the Diputació de Girona. A notable octagonal Baroque baptismal font is preserved.
Fair of la Mel de Crespià
Activity
The annual honey fair of the medieval village of Crespià, originating in the 19th century when the municipality was an important honey-exporting centre.
Hermitage of Sant Miquel de la Roca
Monument
The hermitage of Sant Miquel de la Roca, in the municipality of Crespià (Pla de l'Estany, Girona), is a troglodyte construction set into a cliff of the Fluvià river, making use of a natural rock shelter. It stands above the course of the Fluvià and is one of the two churches in the municipality located outside the village centre considered of special heritage interest.
The honey of Crespià
Food and drink
The comarca's beekeepers produce rosemary, heather, thyme and forest honeys in the sierras that separate the Fluvià from the Terri; each year the village devotes a fair to direct sales and to displaying the trade.
