What to see and do in Esponellà

Esponellà
Village
Esponellà is a municipality in the comarca of the Pla de l'Estany, in the province of Girona, with 446 inhabitants (2025) at 141 metres above sea level, situated on the right bank of the Fluvià river, which forms its northern boundary with Crespià. Known for its stone bridge over the river dating from the late 14th century, the municipality also includes, besides the capital, the former villages of Centenys and Vilert, annexed in 1846. Its parish church, dedicated to Sant Cebrià, is documented from the year 921, when it hosted a trial attended by Count Miró II of Cerdanya and the bishop of Girona; of Romanesque origin, it was altered in the 15th and 16th centuries with Gothic elements, and preserves the original semicircular apse and two sculptures of the Virgin, in wood and alabaster, from the 14th century.
Castle of Esponellà
Monument
Esponellà Castle, in the Pla de l'Estany, originated as a watchtower whose castellans, as early as the 11th century, were the Creixell de Borrassá, a family of notable influence among the minor rural nobility of Girona. They were succeeded by the Palera family in the 12th and 13th centuries, and in that century King James I allowed the stronghold to be rebuilt; it later passed to the Vilademuls, under Dalmau de Rocabertí, who transferred the rights to the Sort family. In the late 14th century, Peter the Ceremonious sold the place to his physician Guillem de Colteller, who was authorised to build a castle, erected in 1381; this sale gave rise to the barony of Esponellà. A chapel dedicated to the Virgin of Hope was built within the grounds. The barony later passed to the Corbera, Muntanyà and Berard families.
Can Bofí de la Torre
Monument
The mas Bofí is a fortified farmhouse of the 16th-17th centuries, situated on a slope facing northwest, in the municipality of Esponellà (Pla de l'Estany, Girona), documented since 1320. The main block, with a gabled roof, extends parallel to the contour lines; at its northeast corner a square tower is set in, projecting from the building, with a hip roof and openings shaped like arrow slits. The courtyard is reached through a baroque-style 18th-century portal with a triangular cornice, beneath which is a niche with a sculpture of Sant Narcís surrounded by glazed white and blue tiles arranged in a diamond pattern; according to the house's tradition, the building belonged to the confraternity of Sant Narcís of Girona. The tower has been repaired and the entrance tiles were replaced in the 20th century.
Bridge of Esponellà
Monument
The bridge of Esponellà crosses the river Fluvià in the Pla de l'Estany (Gerona) and is protected as a Bien Cultural de Interés Local (a local-level heritage protection designation in Catalonia). Its construction was authorised in 1392 — in the late 14th century — by Sibil·la de Vilademuls and was considered complete in 1442, with six arches, of which the central one, wider than the rest, is today spanned by a metal lattice girder while the others retain semicircular ashlar arches. It has been destroyed and rebuilt several times: in 1794 its central span was blown up to slow the French army, and it was not restored until 1900–1903; it was demolished again in 1939 during the retreat of the Republican army, and was rebuilt in its present form by the end of that same year.
Waterfall of Martís
Nature
The Salt de Martís is an area of several waterfalls along the course of the river Fluvià, in the municipal district of Esponellà, and forms the most emblematic point of the Rec d'Espolla, the channel through which the waters of the Clot d'Espolla pond flow into the Fluvià, near the site known as dels Palancs, shortly before reaching the village. The surrounding area forms part of the space protected by the PEIN of the Estany de Banyoles and the Natura 2000 Network.
The bridge of Esponellà over the Fluvià
Monument
Sibil·la de Vilademuls authorized the building of a bridge of six arches and one hundred and fifty-six meters and instituted a toll from which the residents who helped to build it were exempt; the central arch, blown up in the war, was rebuilt in 1939.
