Cabanelles
Village
Cabanelles is a municipality in the comarca of the Alt Empordà, in the province of Girona, also part of the Alta Garrotxa sub-comarca. It is made up of several scattered villages — Queixàs, l'Estela, Sant Martí Sesserres, Vilademires — incorporated into the municipality in 1846, and the exclave of Espinavessa, beside the Fluvià river, added in 1847. The terrain, rugged to the north due to the sierra de la Cirera, which reaches 621 metres at the Puig del Suro, descends southward to the Fluvià itself, while the village stands at 194 metres. It retains a notable group of Romanesque churches, among them the parish church of Santa Coloma, from the 11th century and remodelled at the end of the 12th, with a single nave, semicircular apse and a portal with four archivolts. It has 286 inhabitants.
