What to see and do in Aiguaviva

Aiguaviva
Village
Aiguaviva is a municipality in the Gironès, in the province of Girona, forming part of the Girona urban area, nine kilometres from the capital, whose population is spread across scattered centres such as Aiguaviva de Dalt, Aiguaviva de Baix, Güell, Masrocs and Puigtorrat, besides numerous masies (farmhouses). Its old centre is organised around the parish church of Sant Joan, Gothic with neoclassical elements, which belonged to the monastery of Breda. It also preserves the Romanesque chapel of Santa María de Vilademany, a former Templar commandery, and the castle of Vilademany, today converted into a masia. Its economy, traditionally agricultural, is based on cereals, pulses and dryland melons, with livestock farming and industrial estates along the road from Girona to Santa Coloma de Farners. It has 804 inhabitants.
Castle of Vilademany
Monument
The castle of Vilademany is an old head-of-district castle documented in 1116, in the municipality of Aiguaviva, of which today only some foundations survive in front of the mas Forroll, a building that probably occupies its site and to which the old chapel of the castle, Sant Jaume de Vilademany, is attached. The first reference to the Vilademany lineage, lords of lands in the Gironès and la Selva, dates from 1269, and they resided in the castle at least until the first half of the 14th century. The mas Forroll may have been built around the 15th century; its façade bears the dates 1555 and 1564, and on the chapel door, reopened to the west, an inscription can be read with a coat of arms invoking Sant Jaume, dated 1564. The stone of the hermitage was cleaned and restored around 1986.
House of the Templars
Monument
A former commandery of the Order of the Temple, also known as the Temple de Santa Magdalena because of the adjoining Romanesque chapel, with a 16th-century construction over an earlier 13th-century structure, declared bien cultural de interés nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection). Documented since 1192 as the seat of the commander of the bailiwick of Girona, it had an agricultural rather than defensive character. Of the original plan only the main façade survives, with a coat of arms divided into two quarters, that of the Order and that of a manor house, and a Gothic inscription. After the dissolution of the Temple in 1318 it passed to the Order of the Hospital, being documented in the 17th century as 'casa dita del Temple de Santa Magdalena'. A large courtyard separates the main body from the livestock buildings and storehouses.
