What to see and do in Serra de Daró

Serra de Daró
Village
Serra de Daró is a small agricultural municipality in the comarca of Baix Empordà, in the province of Girona, with 240 inhabitants (INE 2025), which includes the hamlet of Sant Iscle d'Empordà, whose remains of a medieval fortification are still preserved. Documented since the year 1017 under the name of Serra, it did not adopt its current name until the reform of the municipal nomenclature of 1916. Its main building is the parish church of Santa Maria, originating in 1096 although completely rebuilt from 1881 and consecrated in 1884; from the earlier construction only the 17th-century bell tower survives, topped by a pyramidal roof. The land, crossed to the north by the Ter river, is mostly flat and lives on irrigated and dry farming.
Castle of Sant Iscle
Monument
Tower and remains of the fortification of Sant Iscle, documented since the 13th century, in the centre of Sant Iscle d'Empordà, in the municipality of Serra de Daró, in the Baix Empordà. Of the old fortress, declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Spain's highest level of heritage protection), fragments of wall survive, along with the fortification walls of the church and the remains of two cylindrical towers. The most notable, about 12 metres high and well preserved, rises on the threshing floor of a farmhouse and retains loopholes and well-squared ashlar blocks; it shapes the characteristic image of the place. The castle appears documented in 1271 as the property of the counts of Empúries, and passed in the 15th century to the Margarit family and later to the Senesterra.
Sant Iscle d'Empordà
Monument
Sant Iscle d'Empordà is a small settlement in the municipality of Serra de Daró (Baix Empordà) raised, like most villages in the area, on a hillock because of the former wetlands (aiguamolls), from where one of the most characteristic landscapes of the Baix Empordà can be seen. Its parish church, Romanesque, from the 12th century, has a nave with a semicircular apse decorated with a frieze of blind arcading; it is first mentioned in 1081 and was consecrated by Bishop Berenguer Humbert in 1123. Next to it are preserved the base of an old tower and a stretch of wall, restored in 1985, from a castle cited in medieval documents, while farmhouses from the 16th to the 18th centuries are scattered between the church and the ruins of the castle.
