What to see and do in Ullastret

Ullastret
Village
Ullastret is a walled medieval town in the Baix Empordà, in the province of Girona, built on a hill 50 m above sea level, on the right bank of the Daró river, with 249 inhabitants (INE 2025). Its name comes from the Latin oleastretum, wild olive tree, an image depicted next to a wall on the municipal coat of arms approved in 2014, in reference to the town's Iberian and medieval enclosures. The medieval complex includes the church of Sant Pere, the wall, a Gothic exchange hall and several civil buildings. A short distance away lies the ancient Indika, capital of the Indigetes and one of the most important Iberian sites in the Mediterranean for its size and the richness of its archaeological remains, partly displayed in the town's Archaeological Museum.
Iberian City of Ullastret
Monument
The Iberian city of Ullastret extends over the Puig de Sant Andreu and the Illa d'en Reixac, within the municipality of Ullastret, and constitutes the largest urban centre of Iberian culture discovered to date in Catalonia; it was the capital of the Indigetes between the 6th century BC and Roman times, in the territory that ancient authors assigned to this tribe. The site, exceptional both for its size and its state of preservation, has proved fundamental to the knowledge of this culture, which occupied the eastern coast of the Iberian Peninsula during the second half of the first millennium BC. It is one of the venues of the Museu d'Arqueologia de Catalunya, devoted to preserving, researching and disseminating these remains, and in 2014 the area was declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Spain's highest level of heritage protection).
Castle of Ullastret (Torre de la Presó)
Monument
The Castell d'Ullastret is first documented in 1225, when the Bishop of Girona requested it from the count of Empúries as a guarantee of an agreement. It was under the control of the counts of Empordà in the 14th century, and in the 15th it passed into the hands of the Santfeliu, Margarit and Senesterra families. Of the castle only the walls of the lower enclosure remain, surrounding the village and retaining up to ten towers, among them the Torre de la Presó.
Town of Ullastret
Monument
The Vila d'Ullastret is the original centre of the municipality of Ullastret (Baix Empordà), situated on a small rise next to the ancient Iberian city of the same name. It retains a good part of the 14th-century walls, with nine square towers and one circular one, and at its centre stands the church of Sant Pere, Romanesque from the 11th century, with three naves and apses with Lombard blind arcading, remodelled between the 16th and 18th centuries. In front of it lies an esplanade thought to correspond to the old castle, of which no trace remains. Outside the walls stands out the Llotja, a Gothic covered square of the 14th-15th centuries with a timber roof over two large pointed arches, and the houses retain carved Gothic doorways.
Sant Pere d'Ullastret
Monument
Romanesque parish church located in the centre of the settlement of Ullastret, in the Baix Empordà, within the extensive network of Romanesque temples in the region. It dates from the 11th century, although a document from the year 899 by King Charles the Simple already cites a first temple dedicated to Sant Pere and Sant Joan on the same site. It has a trapezoidal basilical plan with three naves covered by a barrel vault, and the apses show Lombard decoration with blind arcading. Two carved imposts of the transverse arch stand out, with the figure of a lion and two mermaids. Between the 17th and 18th centuries the doorway and the side chapels were remodelled, and above the central nave the comunidor, of quadrangular plan, was added.
The discovery of the Iberian city of Ullastret
Historical milestone
The excavations promoted by Lluís Pericot and directed by Miquel Oliva, begun in 1947, brought to light the capital of the Indigetes, a walled city of fifteen hectares and some six thousand inhabitants abandoned at the beginning of the 2nd century BC.
