What to see and do in Ultramort

Ultramort
Village
Ultramort is a small agricultural municipality on the plain of the Baix Empordà, in the province of Girona, built on a hill of about 29 metres overlooking the fertile farmland once reclaimed from the water. Documented since 1046 as Ultramorte, in 1316 it came under the dependency of the castle of Rupià, then belonging to the bishops of Girona. In the village stood the castle of Gleu, known as the castle of Finestres. The population grew in the 18th and 19th centuries to 340 inhabitants in 1857, the year it lost its municipal independence and was annexed to Foixà, a situation reversed in the 1920s. Since then depopulation has been constant, and at the beginning of the 21st century barely eight families remained, dedicated to livestock farming, the economic base together with agriculture.
Castle of Finestres
Monument
The castle of Finestres, in Ultramort (Baix Empordà), is today a large farmhouse of the 16th and 17th centuries built over the old castle of Gleu, already documented in 1123 and popularly known as Castell de Finestres. It stands to the north of the square, between the outskirts of Carrer de Figueres and Carrer de Torroella, on a gentle hill somewhat higher than the neighbouring buildings. The main body, with a gabled roof, has a large voussoired gateway and aligned windows, in front of a terrace resting on segmental arches; at the centre a cylindrical fortification tower stands out, and part of another rectangular tower survives. Its history is practically unknown; it is only known that in the 17th century it belonged to the Balle family. It was declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Spain's highest level of heritage protection).
Santa Eulàlia d'Ultramort
Monument
Romanesque parish church of Ultramort, in the Baix Empordà, already documented in 1046 as Sancta Eulalia de Ultramorte and dedicated to Saint Eulalia of Mérida. Some sources consider it the oldest temple in the diocese of Girona for which a consecration is recorded, received from Bishop Gualaric in the year 816, although its current form, of austere style and with a Cistercian influence typical of small rural settlements, dates from the 12th-13th centuries. It has a single nave covered by a pointed vault, with a classicising baroque doorway topped by a pediment dated 1745 and a rose window, and a bell tower at the southwest corner. Inside, a Gothic gravestone from 1340 and a notable baroque monstrance are preserved. From 1316 it was a possession of the See of Girona.
