What to see and do in Fontanilles

Fontanilles
Village
Fontanilles is an agricultural municipality in the comarca of Baix Empordà, in the province of Girona, near the Montgrí massif and watered by the Daró river, within the Montgrí, les Illes Medes i el Baix Ter natural park. It has an area of only 9 km² and 171 inhabitants (INE 2025), and includes the hamlet of Llabià, incorporated into the municipality in 1846. Documented since the year 965, in the mid-19th century it had barely 108 inhabitants, according to Madoz's Dictionary. It preserves the ruins of the castle of Fontanilles, known as the Castellot, from the 11th century, and the church of San Martín, from the 12th century.
Castle of Fontanilles (el Castellot)
Monument
El Castellot is the popular name for the remains of a 12th-century castle situated in the municipality of Fontanilles (Baix Empordà), atop a small hill. Of the old castle only one wing survives, today integrated into a two-storey house built of stone blocks and lime mortar and roofed with Arabic tiles, which has gradually been extended with new living quarters. In front of the house can be seen several stretches of low walls that do not allow a certain reconstruction of the layout of the original enclosure, which must have occupied the whole upper part of the hill, and at the north-east end the base of a circular tower can still be made out. In the early 20th century, in 1904, the vault that supported the nave was removed, which later made it necessary to reinforce the side walls with buttresses.
Sant Martí de Fontanilles
Monument
Single-nave Romanesque church located in Fontanilles (Baix Empordà), with a semicircular-plan abside and a double-splayed window; the vault is pointed in the nave and dome-shaped at the head. Already documented in 1019 as a possession of the Chapter of the Cathedral of Girona, it appears in the 1182 consecration act of the Augustinian chapter of Santa María de Ullà as one of the churches under that monastery's dominion. The building has undergone reforms and additions after the medieval period, such as the sacristy block, and the fortification works came to double the temple's original height. On the south side a new portal was opened in the 18th century, and above the front wall rises a baroque bell-gable with four openings.
Sant Romà de Llabià
Monument
Romanesque church of Llabià, a hamlet of the municipality of Fontanilles (Baix Empordà), included in the Inventory of the Architectural Heritage of Catalonia. It is a single-nave building with a semicircular abside, a round-arch portal with an archivolt decorated with human heads, and a later square-plan bell tower with twin arches on each side. The church, then called Sancti Romani de Libiano, is already mentioned in 1058, when it was restored to the bishop of Girona by countess Ermesenda de Barcelona, and belonged to the Augustinian chapter of Santa María de Ullà. It forms part of the notable ensemble of rural Romanesque architecture of the Baix Empordà.
