What to see and do in Parlavà

Parlavà
Village
Parlavà is a town in the interior of the comarca of Baix Empordà, in the province of Girona, at the foot of the Montori hill, on the plain watered by the Ter and Daró rivers; the municipality also includes the hamlet of Fonolleres. Documented since the 10th century as Palatio Rabano, it belonged between the 14th and 17th centuries to the jurisdiction of the castle of Rupià, whose bishop of Girona commissioned in 1385 a study of the possibility of fortifying the village church, the probable origin of today's fortified church of Sant Feliu, which presides over the town with its narrow alleys. In Fonolleres stands the Gothic church of San Cristóbal, and the municipality preserves numerous farmhouses from the 16th to the 18th centuries. The economy is based on dry farming and livestock. It has 432 inhabitants (INE 2025).

Sant Cristòfol de Fonolleres
Monument
Small Romanesque-style church in the Fonolleres hamlet, in the municipality of Parlavà (Baix Empordà), part of the region's notable ensemble of rural Romanesque architecture. Already cited in an 1122 donation to the bishop of Girona by Estefania de Fonolleres, it is a single-nave temple with an abside that is pentagonal inside and semicircular outside, raised with a defensive character typical of many Empordà churches. The portal on the front has pointed archivolts and very eroded capitals, and the bell tower is a four-arch bell-gable; inside, the transverse arches of the pointed nave show corbels carved with human heads. Outside, a fragment of the pre-Romanesque head of the earlier temple is preserved, unearthed in 1970.
