What to see and do in La Tallada d'Empordà

La Tallada d'Empordà
Village
La Tallada d'Empordà is a town on the Baix Ter plain, in the comarca of Baix Empordà, province of Girona, on the left bank of the Ter river, on the border with the Alt Empordà; it groups together the settlements of Canet de la Tallada, Marenyà, la Tallada and Tor, and has 490 inhabitants. Its name may derive from the Arabic at-taliat, «the watchtower», or from the Catalan tallada, a forest clearing cut down for cultivation. The castle of la Tallada, of which remains survive, is documented since the 11th century, when it was part of the county of Empúries; in 1309 it was handed over as a marriage guarantee at the wedding of the count's heir Malgaulí to Princess Elisabet of Sicily. Beside the castle stands the parish church of Santa María, fortified with a circular tower from the 12th to the 14th centuries.
Castle of la Tallada i església de Santa Maria
Monument
A castle of the 14th-16th centuries and the Romanesque parish church of Santa Maria (12th-13th centuries, with 18th-century extensions) in the centre of La Tallada d'Empordà. The church occupies the north corner of the walled enclosure, in the highest part of the centre, and was originally the castle chapel, documented since 1279-1280 under the direct rule of the counts of Empúries. It has a single nave with a semicircular apse and two added side chapels; above the apse a tower was built which served as the north-east corner of the walls, probably in the 16th century, and in the 18th century the chapels and sacristy were added. It preserves an image of Sant Galderic, patron of the Catalan peasants, carved in cypress wood in 1987. The complex is declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Spain's highest level of heritage protection).
Sant Esteve de Maranyà
Monument
Sant Esteve de Marenyà is a church situated at the highest point of the Marenyà hamlet, within the municipality of La Tallada d'Empordà, protected as a local cultural asset. It has a single nave with a semicircular abside and a body added on the north wall; the symmetrical facade opens with a doorway of two round arches in decreasing gradation and a circular opening above it, from which the bell tower rises, today integrated into the fortification built over the walls of the church itself. The abside preserves Lombard band decoration marking the building's original height, and the interior is covered with a barrel vault and a double triumphal arch. Built in stone, it has solid buttresses and arrow slits, a vestige of its defensive reconversion.
Santa Maria de la Tallada
Monument
Romanesque parish church of la Tallada d'Empordà (Baix Empordà), located at the northeast corner of the old walled precinct of the castle, at the highest point of the settlement, and declared bien cultural de interés nacional (a Catalan cultural-heritage protection category). It has a single nave with a semicircular apse and two side chapels, and was built between the 12th and 13th centuries: the first documentary references, from 1279-1280, cite it as the chapel of the castle of la Tallada, under the rule of the counts of Empúries. In the 16th century the settlement was fortified and a tower was raised over the apse as a turret of the walls, and in the 18th century the side chapels and the sacristy were added. It preserves an image of Saint Galderic, patron of the Catalan peasants, carved in cypress in 1987.
Sant Climent de Tor
Monument
Small church in Romanesque style in la Tallada d'Empordà (Baix Empordà), part of the notable ensemble of rural Romanesque architecture of the region. It stands in the settlement of Tor and consists of a single nave with a semicircular apse on a base of natural rock, with a splayed round-arched window and Lombard decorative bands; the façade, raised above street level and reached by a flight of steps, preserves the original doorway, remodelled in 1752 according to the inscription on the lintel. Documented since the late 13th century as a dependency of Sant Esteve de Marenyà, probably of earlier origin, from the 11th century, it was fortified between the 15th and 16th centuries, when a side chapel was added to it; in the mid-20th century a second, perpendicular nave of modern construction was added.
