Castle of la Tallada i església de Santa Maria Monument · La Tallada d'Empordà, Baix Empordà, Girona A castle of the 14th-16th centuries and the Romanesque parish church of Santa Maria (12th-13th centuries, with 18th-century extensions) in the centre of La Tallada d'Empordà. The church occupies the north corner of the walled enclosure, in the highest part of the centre, and was originally the castle chapel, documented since 1279-1280 under the direct rule of the counts of Empúries. It has a single nave with a semicircular apse and two added side chapels; above the apse a tower was built which served as the north-east corner of the walls, probably in the 16th century, and in the 18th century the chapels and sacristy were added. It preserves an image of Sant Galderic, patron of the Catalan peasants, carved in cypress wood in 1987. The complex is declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Spain's highest level of heritage protection). Photo: Antoni Grifol (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in La Tallada d'Empordà
