What to see and do in Albons

Albons
Village
Albons is a town on the Baix Empordà plain, in the contact zone between the Empordà lowland and the Montgrí massif, with 845 inhabitants (INE 2025). The place and its church are documented since the 12th century, and the castle is mentioned in 13th-century texts; in the early 14th century the count of Empúries ordered the town fortified. Of the Renaissance castle, now converted into housing, a great voussoired portal from the 14th-15th centuries survives, giving access to the inner courtyard, bordered on the south by the wall of the church of Sant Cugat. Beside the village stands the Romanesque chapel of Sant Grau, of which only the nave remains, restored in 1986; every 13 October the villagers climb in procession to the hermitage along the old path to celebrate the feast.
Castle of Albons
Monument
A Renaissance-style castle of vernacular construction from the 17th century, on the Plaça Major of Albons, beside the remains of the village's old fortification.
Sant Cugat d'Albons
Monument
The church of Sant Cugat, parish church of Albons, in the Baix Empordà, is included in the Inventory of the Architectural Heritage of Catalonia and is already documented in the years 1279 and 1280. It is a single-nave building with a very deep semicircular apse of early Romanesque construction, with a somewhat later western section, of late Romanesque style; the façade, the bell tower, some openings and the interior plasterwork are modern restorations, while the north wall preserves remains of an old side door and large ashlars reused from Roman times. The nave is covered with a barrel vault and the presbytery with a quarter-sphere vault; a monolithic Romanesque baptismal font is preserved, and near the western end of the nave there are two Gothic gravestones.
Sant Grau d'Albons
Monument
A sanctuary located about 2 km west of the village of Albons (Baix Empordà), on the sierra that bears its name, near the fountain of la Merla, where, besides Sant Grau, Sant Roc and Sant Sebastià are also venerated. It preserves much of its Romanesque fabric, with the original masonry visible on the side walls and a splayed window on the south side, although in the 18th century the orientation of the nave was reversed: the old Romanesque door, to the west, became the head of the church, and the present façade, from 1753, was opened to the east, where the semicircular apse had previously stood, now disappeared save for vestiges of its foundations. The most popular aplec, that of 13 October, had almost completely disappeared and was revived in the early 21st century with mass, the singing of the Goigs and sardanas.
