What to see and do in Viladamat

Viladamat
Village
Viladamat is a village on the Empordà plain, in the province of Girona, close to the coast, with views from the Puig Segalar over the Gulf of Roses and the hamlet of Sant Feliu de la Garriga, which has a Romanesque church and a castle. It has 500 inhabitants. Owing to its closeness to ancient Empúries it retains Iberian and Roman remains, including the villa of Tolegassos, and Greek pottery from the 6th and 5th centuries BC. Documented since 1060, it belonged until 1621 to the monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes. On 21 November 1467 the battle of Viladamat was fought here, between John II and his son Prince Ferdinand, the future Ferdinand the Catholic, who took refuge in a house in the village after the defeat. It retains the church of San Quirze and Santa Julita, from the 16th century, and the gate and walls of the Pabordia, a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection).
