Vilanant
Village
Vilanant is a rural village in the Alt Empordà bathed by the Manol and Rissec rivers, whose municipal territory also includes the hamlet of Taravaus. The oldest documentation dates from 1018, the year in which the parish church of Santa Maria de Vilanant is mentioned in the record of a trial held in Besalú before Count Bernat Tallaferro, of the county to which the village belonged. Its old quarter, from the 17th and 18th centuries, preserves well-kept and rebuilt houses, the Moors' tower, remains of the castle of Soler, the 18th-century chapel of San Jaime and the 11th-century Romanesque hermitage of San Salvador de Coquells. It lives from olive groves, livestock farming and construction, and offers hiking routes among forests and drove roads. It has 406 inhabitants (INE 2025).
