Sant Celoni
Village
Sant Celoni is a town in the Vallès Oriental, in Barcelona province, halfway between Barcelona and Girona, on the communication route toward France via La Jonquera and at the foot of the Montseny and Montnegre mountains, in the basin of the Tordera River; it preserves remains of its old medieval walled precinct and has 18,977 inhabitants. The church of San Martín, opened in 1703, displays on its façade one of the largest baroque sgraffito murals in Catalonia, from 1762. The chapel of San Ponce, in Romanesque style from the late 12th century, was part of the old leper hospital, and in the Rectoría Vella park stands the church of San Martín de Pertegaz, the old parish that gave its name to the town, next to a 15th-century Gothic rectory that today serves as a cultural center.
